Costs and Benefits
Research conducted by David Tilman and colleagues at the University of Minnesota (Proceedings of the National Acedemy of Sciences, DOI:10.1073/pnas.0604600103) as reported in New Scientist (July 2006) has shown that:
- Ethanol from maize - reduce emissions by 12% compared to petrol
- Biodiesel from soybeans - reduce emissions by 41% compared to petrol
However, if all the maize (corn), and soybeans grown in the US were used to make these fuels they could cover less than 5% of current US needs (2006)
