Cancer occurs when some of the bodies cells grow and divide abnormally fast. The mass of cells forms a tumour which disrupts the bodies usual activities. If left untreated the tumour spreads to other parts of the body, causing death. Despite US president Nixon declaring the war on cancer in the early 1970s the incidence of cancer has continued to grow. One in three of us is expected to suffer from cancer at some point in our lives.

Whilst cancer has always been a fact of, at least higher vertebrate life (dinosaur fossils indicated that they too suffered) modern lifestyles and industrial chemicals are thought to be a large factor in the increased cancer rates.
