Most insect repellents are based on a toxin called DEET. DEET's pretty nasty, it melts plastic and has been implicated in Gulf War Syndrome. The chemcial industry weighs the hazards of using insect repellents against the symptoms of tropical diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. What's not mentioned is that there are both effective natural alternatives to DEET based insect repellents and behavioural technqiues that can be used to reduce the incidence of insect bites.
