The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) was formed in 1949 to provide security for the United States, Canada and Europe should either of them be attacked by the Soviets. The treaty states that if any member nation is attacked, all the other nations signing the treaty will respond to the attack together (thereby providing a nuclear second-strike strategy for all signatories). NATO maintains a variety of bases, airfields and missile systems in Europe to provide a response in case of attack.
